You’ve Heard About Equine Whole Body Vibration, but How Does it Work?
When horses are in motion, there is gravity that pulls them down to the earth, and rebounding ground reaction force. Whole Body Vibration (with proper mechanics), delivers vertical impulses from the bottom up. When standing on an EquiVibe plate, a horse’s entire body vibrates due to the frequency of the platform, which causes muscles to contract and stretch in order to sustain balance. These natural reflexes are involuntary (much like the human knee jerk reaction), and happen very rapidly.
Therefore, while “vibing” between gravity and the platform, horses gain benefit from the resulting stimulation to their bones, muscles, nerves, circulatory systems, and soft tissues, making it a very powerful form of conditioning and equine sports therapy.
When a horse is exercised, they use approximately 40% of their muscles, whereas with an EquiVibe plate they are using well over 90%, some they may have never used before. During normal training and conditioning, a horse’s muscles contract one or two times per second, as compared to 10 to 60 times per second with whole body equine vibration therapy.
I like to think of it as a gentle way to stimulate and condition muscles, bone, ligaments and tendons without the damaging wear & tear that comes along with actual riding. It’s not a replacement for exercise, but it’s a way to help our horses recover from training and performing to stay in the best shape possible (for as long as possible)!
What Benefits Does EquiVibe Whole Body Vibration Therapy Provide?
Outside of conditioning soft tissues and developing muscles, which leads to increased strength and equine bone density, one of the immediate effects of WBV (whole body vibration) on the EquiVibe platform is improved lymphatic and blood circulation.

How is EquiVibe Different Than Other Equine Vibration Platforms?
The primary characteristic that sets EquiVibe apart, is that it delivers VERTICAL VIBRATION, which is the type preferred by medical and veterinary professionals, for horses and humans alike. This is because when we walk or run (due to the physics of gravity), we don’t do so in a side to side motion, but the movement is up and down. Vertical vibration works with the horse (vs. against), to more closely mirror and simulate natural movement. This is very important, because not all equine vibration platforms operate with vertical vibration.
Second, true whole body vibration is delivered from a stable, solid platform. Some other equine “vibe plates” operate with a circular, or side to side motion from a moving platform, creating a stressful “jack hammer” or “teeter totter” effect. Not only is this less beneficial – with the vibration sometimes only reaching the horse’s knees (vs. their entire body), these types of unnatural vibration may even be detrimental to a horse’s health. The secret to EquiVibe’s effectiveness, is that it’s a stationary platform operating with widely adjustable (10 to 60 hertz), smooth, VERTICAL vibration.
Another major benefit, is that every EquiVibe equine vibration platform is delivered with a special guide outlining specific programs based on the issues being addressed, including recommended frequency settings. Different health issues benefit from different vibrational frequencies, so depending on level of fitness or type of equine rehabilitation desired, the duration and frequency of use will vary. How does EquiVibe Compare to Other Types of Equine Sports Therapy?
In our barn, we also use red light and microcurrent therapy in coordination with, and to compliment the healing and recovery benefits of equine whole body vibration. As you can see by the before and after ultrasound images (taken at 60 days), EquiVibe is an effective form of equine sports therapy for rehabilitating tendon injuries as well. In October of 2016, our (then) 16 year old gelding, “Dot Com” hyper-extended in a barrel racing run, creating a severe tear (over 50%) to his right superficial flexor tendon.
After three months of daily EquiVibe sessions, PRCA Vet. of the Year, Dr. Marty Tanner stated that Dot Com was showing healing progress at his 90-day ultrasound that he doesn’t typically see until the SIX MONTH mark. After several months of continued daily EquiVibe sessions and hand walking, Dot Com was cleared by Dr. Tanner to start light exercise under saddle in March, then approved for speed work in June. He fully recovered and returned to professional competition in the fall of 2017.

After Dot Com’s diagnosis of “navicular” in 2013 (including bony changes), he was lame for over a year. He overcame that to start a new career as a barrel horse, and competed at many barrel races and Texas pro rodeos. He bounced back a second time from a severe tendon tear (over 50%) to successfully return to the arena at age 17 as a professional team roping (head) horse. He’s still going strong today and winning ropings (at age 23) with EquiVibe therapy pre-ride! |
Frosty was retired in 2008 when he developed ring bone after an overreaching incident while competing as a head horse. He was later discovered to also be dealing with sub-clinical laminitis. Pistol suffered an injury to the collateral ligaments in his feet in 2012. Even after aggressive treatment, years later he still wasn’t sound. After a setback in 2015, in 2017 he made his official comeback to competition thanks to a gradual seven month rehab period, and is now performing (and clocking) better than before his injury many years ago. As of 2023, Pistol is still competitive and performing as a barrel horse – clocking better than in his youth! |
